Have you made new popcorn?
Today I apple pie and ginger tea, which is very autumn ...
Already from the first story you will have noticed that on board the Cruise on the mainland every day is never the same and the surprises are always behind ... the anchor;)
And speaking of surprises ... I want to tell you what happened on the evening of the Egyptian Grand Gala.
Yes, because while the Guests were intent on enjoying the evening, it happened behind the scenes ...
… But I don't want to anticipate anything. Our story begins at 7.30 in the morning on 29 July 2020, when the Cruise director - The Queen for insiders - calls the heads of kitchen, dining room, rooms and reception to explain the service order of the day .
In this case it is a review, as the recurrence in question has been organized for months.
But, as some say, "repetita iuvant" ... and The Queen loves to repeat until she exhausts.
For the Cruise director, illustrating the order of service is an aspect of the protocol which, given her notoriously allergic nature to complaints like a celiac to gluten, she does not want to give up. So… “prevention is better than cure”, is the other magic formula reaffirmed without interruption.
And so there is one for everyone.
For Banga, the trusty handyman, who has to count all the candles placed in the warehouse one by one, otherwise he'll have to run to the nearest store.
For chef Ciro who must check the arrival of the fish no later than 11 am, after which time the pre-alarm goes on
And Ciro knows very well that when the lagging supplier breaks the chain of work, he practices his favorite pastime.
Do you really want to know the pastime of the chef when he gets nervous?
I'll tell you in the next story :)))
But that's not all.
There is also something for Tony, the room manager with a passion for Cuban rhythms and beautiful women.
But beware: at work it is a Swiss watch and like La Queen it has a passion for organization.
Despite this, the woman harasses him too, reminding him - as if she doesn't know! - to leave the right space between the tables for the performance of the belly dancer.
But the list obviously does not end here because the Turchini are arriving today. He is an excellent fork while she is vegan with an intolerance to legumes. Will Ciro and his Neapolitan flair be able to surprise the Lady?
The Queen walks over to the chef, still caught in his morning coffee and croissant ritual, and warns him.
Suddenly the face of Ciro, a true Sicilian chef, notoriously ironic and pungent, turns into a grimace of pain.
Transformation worthy of a canvas of the Commedia dell'Arte.
And swallowing the last sip of hot coffee, which also goes sideways, he replies: “But what inspiration? Min ** ia, my lady ... but can you hear a vegan who sucks legumes? No eggs, no meat, no fish, no legumes ... what the fuck does it eat? As long as I don't want chinoiserie because I don't want to have anything to do with Chinese cuisine by contract. "
In response, La Queen, knowing to leverage male and Sicilian pride, turns to Ciro with a generous smile reminding him that real chefs test themselves above all on difficulties.
And since he is rich in resources, he will find something tasty for Ms. Turchini too.
The director retires to the office as the day unfolds with the pressure of events.
Shortly thereafter, Egyptian extras armed with smoking torches appear on board while the background music evokes sphinxes and pyramids.
The children, already awake, want a souvenir photo with the Egyptians before going down to the beach, like in a big morning circus.
A very unusual start for guests on board.
The day proceeds at a good pace for the crew and as the evening approaches, behind the scenes everyone increases the pace. The goal is to arrive on time at sunset with the entrance of the parade of Egyptian extras in the restaurant.
"Come on there!" they scream from behind.
Tony opens the parade, in his starched white uniform with Cruise Officer ranks and insignia, followed by Ciro and the whole procession of Egyptians.
Between one course and another the belly dancer creeps in and with fluid and sinuous movements completes an absolutely dreamlike picture.
But the icing on the cake is yet to come.
Indeed, here it is!
In the middle of the celebrations, a lady shows up at the reception asking to speak to the manager.
Beatrice, Queen's right hand, intervenes and previews, as the moment is not the best to interrupt the activity of the director ready for the awarding of the guests.
But the woman insists. He has to meet the director of Cruise and reveals to Beatrice the reason for her obstinacy.
At which, after a few minutes, the two finally meet and ... "recognize each other".
Who is this bright-eyed, visibly excited woman?
You won't believe it but the lady in question is ...
Costa Cruises' long-time cruise director!
Yup!
Who, having heard about the “Cruise on the mainland” for some time, absolutely wants to meet his “colleague”.
It is truly an exciting moment, where the two directors are immortalized by the flashes of the on-board photographer complete with a donut and captain's hat.
Double toast that evening, in honor of the two women who were both moved.
"Carràmba, what a surprise!" ... Raffaella Carrà would have said.
In fact, it might seem like one of those made-up stories, a bit kitsch and out of date.
But is not so.
And do you know why?
Because I already told you!
On board, the stranger things are, the more true they are.

p.s. Ms. Turchini was also moved! Ciro gave birth to a recipe for her that definitely made a splash;)

Nice 3-star hotel in great location with fantastic staff
he Hotel Giulia is not particularly fancy, but we loved our time there. First and foremost, the staff is absolutely terrific. Warm and helpful in every way, they provided a first-class experience. Our room was simple but super functional with great air conditioning, water pressure, an ample refrigerator and a comfortable bed. The location is great, right across the street from the boardwalk and beach, and walking distance to some very good restaurants. Very nice (free) bicycles were available to guests and we took a great 5-mile ride up to Forte Di Marmi on the bike path. A very good continental breakfast was included.
