A sweet itinerary
Follow me and you will not regret! Where is it? Always starting from the convenient bike path in front of the Giulia hotel, with a few rides we arrive in Viareggio to discover the three pastry shops that are closest to my heart, different from each other but linked to each other by the imperceptible red thread - my - of memories and tradition.
And when tradition looks forward we are destined to remain in the myth, as in the case of our first stop, "GALLIANO", the place we find at the beginning of the Viareggio promenade in the beautiful piazza M.Luisa where some of the most beautiful liberty buildings in this city. Entering, the scent of pastries is still mixed with the fresh smell of the important restructuring that this place has undergone, a sign of a clear desire on the part of the owners to continue to follow a road that rests on solid roots. The Vannozzi family, in fact, for four generations has handed down the passion for pastry, famous for the incomparable rice pudding, made to perfection by grandmother Amalia since 1946, which in turn was inspired by an ancient family recipe . Other delicacies not to be missed by GALLIANO are the granite, the almond one my favorite! I taste it sitting by a privileged position, under the white umbrellas outside the room, between a distracted reading of my favorite newspaper and a look at the Versilia strasse ... and I feel on holiday even if I'm in my city.
Our second destination is further on, always in the sea promenade but in the most popular area, the one towards the pier or, as we say viareggini, "from the clock down". I bring you from the FAUZIA, where the size of the room is inversely proportional to the circumference of the pasta produced there. Famous are the "cream bombs", with which you can safely replace a meal! La Fauzia, a true Viareggio character, is well known for his passion for carnival, so much so that the passage of the wagons gives the hot donuts to the figures throwing them directly from the counter outside the room. Ideal for a sweet snack: bomb and blonde foam!
For the last stop, almost at the end of the cycle path we cut towards the city center and we head to Piazza S. Andrea, where alongside the church of the same name we find the ancient GAMBALUNGA pastry shop. The wooden counter on which all kinds of delicacies are exhibited almost as if they were in a jewelry shop, the ceilings with their vaulted ceilings and the shimmering chandeliers contribute to making the atmosphere suspended and out of time. In this place, many years ago, my grandfather Mario went to have breakfast and it was there that he fell in love with grandmother Eugenia, the girl who served the pastas, just behind the same counter today. My favorite dessert, the chocolate profitterolles, I buy it only from GAMBALUNGA, together with the befanini "co 'pippori" that are rigorously baked in the first week of January, without extensions or advances. I grew up with GAMBALUNGA pastas that my grandfather used to bring me every morning, to honor that sweet tradition that, like the white glaze of brioche that made his beloved, united sweetness and sentiment. Because, as Grandma Eugenia said ... "the stomach is close to the heart!"
