Christmas traditions: Lucca and its buccellato

Christmas is near and I could not resist another bike out of town. Lucca is for me one of the constant destinations in this period that, being a medieval city with a round plan, lends itself to be explored on foot and, why not? even on a bike!

I take it easy by renting my favorite means of transport to Porta S. Anna, having fun walking around the walls from where I can admire the city of the hundred bell towers from above, then descend into its beating heart that in this period does not it is hard to turn into a real crib.

A jump in the two squares that I prefer: that of the 'Amphitheater and, not far from Piazza Napoleone, summer theater of one of the most important musical events in Italy, the Summer Festival, and then finally dive into the crush of the alleys where, next to the strange brands , The workshops of the artisans are the protagonists for the joy of the tourists that every month of the year decide to make a stop. Last visit after the crowded via Fillungo is a must in Piazza S. Michele, another symbol of Lucca, where the bike takes me straight to the point that has become the mecca of the Lucca tradition in the world: the shop of Taddeucci.

Entering it is like being sucked back in time, where inlaid wooden desks, glassed glass showcases, pastries and lace accompany what for me is one of the perfumes of Christmas: the smell of the buccellato. For the few who do not yet know it, buccellato is a simple and good dessert, a sweet bread, invented in 1881 by the great-great-grandfather Jacopo Taddeucci.

The original recipe is secret, but certainly flour, eggs, sugar, butter, raisins and aniseed, there are. The rest is a mystery that has been handed down from father to son for five generations without fear of competition or middle-aged crisis. There is no visitor who does not buy at least one to give away after having tasted a piece directly on the marble counter sipping a cup of hot chocolate listening to the background as the most famous arias of Giacomo Puccini, one of Taddeucci's many illustrious clients.

And I too, in December, love to repeat this sweet tradition, which has the power to accompany me in one of the most evocative periods of the year!
