In just one day in Tuscany you could visit Lucca the city from the 100 Churches, have lunch in a typical trattoria in the hills while sipping excellent local wine, visit the famous Tower of Pisa, retire for a delicious aperitif in Pietrasanta (the city of artists) and end the day by relaxing with a fish dinner by the sea.
If you can visit all these places in one day, imagine what you can do in three days!
You might think that these destinations are very distant from each other ... but there is a place: Versilia, on the sea in Tuscany that is exactly in the center between all these destinations.
And the Giulia Hotel is right in Versilia, precisely on the sea. Here is what you can quickly reach from the Hotel
Visit Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre are one of the most enchanting places in Italy: 5 small villages overlooking the sea, with characteristic colors. Since 1997 they have been declared UNESCO heritage. The Cinque Terre are ancient fishing villages located along the rugged Italian coast. Each of these villages is characterized by colorful houses and vineyards clinging to the steep terraces built on the coast. The ports are crowded with fishing boats and in the typical trattorias it is possible to try the seafood specialties, as well as the famous Ligurian condiment: the pesto.
They can be reached by car (but it is very difficult to find parking), by train or by ship.
To reach them by train, all you have to do is go to the station (behind the hotel there is a bus to the station: time 7 minutes) and in about 1 hour you will arrive comfortably in the Cinque Terre! Or by ship. You can take the ferry from the Viareggio pier (even here 7 minutes by bus from the Hotel). The ship leaves every morning at 9:00 and will take you back to Viareggio at 6:00 pm.
Discover Art in Florence
There is only one word to describe it: extraordinary! Florence is one of the richest historical centers of art and history. One cannot not go to Tuscany without having first visited it.
Of course, it is very chaotic: every day thousands of tourists move through the streets of Florence. For this reason it is very convenient to base yourself in Versilia. In this way you can reach Florence in 1 hour by car, visit the monuments, squares and museums and at the end of the day comfortably return to the hotel without being congested in the chaos of Florence.
Absolutely not to be missed are the Uffizi Museum where you can admire the masterpieces of the art of the 500. Piazza del Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, Piazza Santa Maria Novella are just some of the most famous squares. But the advice we give you is to lose yourself in the alleys of the city center: every street, every square contains works of extraordinary beauty.
And while you get lost in the narrow streets of the city, you can't miss eating a focaccia filled with the most famous gastronomy: "All'Antico Vinaio" (the address is Via dei Neri, 74).
The Medieval walls of Lucca
Just 15 minutes by car from the Hotel, or reachable by bus (stop behind the hotel), Lucca is the only Italian city to have completely preserved the medieval walls. A day in Lucca really deserves! You can lose yourself in the various alleys, or take a romantic walk over the walls! In ancient times it was called the city of 100 churches, and if you pay attention you will find so many. However, within the walls there is another wall: the first Lucca. Now it is called Piazza Anfiteatro, but few know that what is now a square was once the first Lucca. Not far from this square is the Guinigi Tower, on top of which is a charming panoramic garden. It is not always possible to visit, but I strongly advise you to inform yourself!
The Pisa's tower
Pisa is also just a few kilometers away from the hotel, which can also be reached by car, train or bus (take the last destination bus from Pisa Airport and get off at the Torre stop).
Pisa is famous for the Leaning Tower which is located in what has been called one of the most beautiful squares in the world: Piazza dei Miracoli. Piazza dei Miracoli is composed of the Baptistery, the Campo Santo, the Duomo with its extraordinary doors in Bronze and the Tower.
Proceeding along the streets we reach the Lungarno, the avenue that runs along the Arno river. Here on June 16th one of the most important events in Pisa is celebrated: the Luminara. Every building that faces you is entirely covered with candles, creating a magical effect to say the least! The ceremony includes a celebration in the whole city and around 22:00 pyrotechnic games directly from the river.
The city of music: Torre del Lago Puccini (5 minutes from the Hotel)
The composer Giacomo Puccini, to whom the town is dedicated today, lived a large part of his life. On summer evenings, the outdoor theater is very impressive. In fact it is right on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli!
Don't miss Villa Puccini, home of the Artist transformed into a museum immediately after death without affecting it. And for the romantics ... I recommend a walk along the lake and an aperitif at the "Chalet" the place that is right on the lake!
But that's not all ... If after a trip to Florence, Lucca, Pisa or the Cinque Terre you want to enjoy a bit of relaxation while remaining in a context of history, art and gastronomy ...
Let me tell you about two small towns surrounding the Hotel: Pietrasanta and Camaiore
The city of artists: Pietrasanta
Only 4 km from the Giulia Hotel, rises Pietrasanta. A small town, to be reached preferably by car or bus (there is a stop just behind the hotel.) Walking through the 3 main streets you will discover many small places to have a drink and multiple art galleries. Yes, because Pietrasanta has been welcoming artists from all over the world for many years now. Not by chance in the main square you can find exhibited works by contemporary artists.
And if you look carefully, you will discover that the bell tower of the cathedral was designed by Michelangelo in person! An aperitif here in the square I would say it deserves. And for the more daring, I recommend taking the climb that leads to the old city walls. The view from up there is really romantic!
Camaiore the Medieval Town
Camaiore represents the historic center of our beloved Lido di Camaiore the waterfront where the Hotel is located. It is a true medieval center and important archaeological discoveries have recently been made! Camaiore is a quieter city than Pietrasanta but retains the true flavor of our countryside. In Via Vittorio Emanuele 9 you will find the food store "Bonuccelli Salumi Norcineria" where you can taste the best cured meats of the area (the Salumi Triglia)! And maybe enjoying a good snack, I suggest you take a walk to the famous Badia di Camaiore: the main church of the city. Here time seems to have stopped at the medieval age and with a little luck you can still find some old lady willing to tell us about the ancient recipes!
The best month to visit all these places? May and the beginning of June (during Pentecost)

Nice 3-star hotel in great location with fantastic staff
he Hotel Giulia is not particularly fancy, but we loved our time there. First and foremost, the staff is absolutely terrific. Warm and helpful in every way, they provided a first-class experience. Our room was simple but super functional with great air conditioning, water pressure, an ample refrigerator and a comfortable bed. The location is great, right across the street from the boardwalk and beach, and walking distance to some very good restaurants. Very nice (free) bicycles were available to guests and we took a great 5-mile ride up to Forte Di Marmi on the bike path. A very good continental breakfast was included.
